About Us - Organic Biodynamic Beef Western Australia

Organic Biodynamic Beef Western Australia

"Baramba" is a 1700 ha (4500 ac) cattle farm that is currently being run by the 5th generation of the de Burgh family in the Gingin district. Sid took over the farm from his parents in 1977 and Edith joined him in 1979. Situated in the coastal strip north of Perth "Baramba" borders the Moore River about 12 km inland from the town of Ledge Point and comprises a wide range of soil types from sandy banksia country to black clay, making it an ideal place to raise livestock. About one third of the farm is uncleared land and is mainly used for shelter.

Our herd can be traced back to an old blood line of British Shorthorn and Devon beef cattle and we are currently running about 250 breeders. This falls well short of our stocking capacity but is keeping in line with our principle of not stressing the land and of giving our cattle every opportunity to reach their optimal condition by natural means.

Over the years we became increasingly aware of the deteriorating quality of the soil and in 1992 we began the slow conversion process to the biodynamic method of farming based on the extensive body of work and knowledge by the Austrian anthroposophist Rudolf Steiner about 100 years ago (go to 'about biodynamics'). We obtained the 'A' grade Demeter certification in 1998 and we haven't looked back since.

We are now in the position to sell our fully biodynamically grown 18 month old choice beef as well as yearling sheep (hoggets) directly to the public and have done so very successfully for the last five years.
